Gender Equality Officer 2010

TomasConway

Hi everyone,

My Name is Tomás Conway and I’m the Gender Equality Officer for 2010/2011
My role as Gender Equality Officer and as a member of the Equality Working Group is to ensure that students in Ireland are not subjected to any form of gender specific discrimination.

My campaigning activities for the year will include:

  • Equal Parental Rights Awareness Campaign

I intend on setting up a focus group in each college for parent to help them assist their student children to deal with the pressures they face daily in college. As part of this group, I would like to address the issue of fathers' rights and the lack there of. I would like the group to offer support to these fathers.

  • The No Name Campaign

For some time, this campaign has been on my mind. The hurtful names that people (and in particular women) are called by others in college for ‘sleeping around’ has got to be put a stop to. Many of these names, though sometimes said as a joke, can have a hidden negative effect on a person. Most of these names are aimed at women and where a lad is in the same situation he can often be addressed as a ‘hero’ or ‘the man’. This is clearly unfair and I would like to tackle this in colleges.

  • Anti Domestic Violence Campaign

I would like to work to remove the stigma associated with domestic violence and abuse in the home. I would like to in particular try to encourage young men who suffer violence be it in the home or in a relationship to come forward and seek the help that is there.

If you feel you there is any issue which you need to contact me on, please do not hesitate. Call me on 085 7687563 or email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
