Thousands of Waterford Students Demonstrate for Release of Exam Results

Over 3,000 Waterford students demonstrated on the campuses of Waterford Institute of Technology today (February 3) to demand the release of their overdue exam results.

President of the Union of Students’ in Ireland (USI), Peter Mannion, addressed protesters at event, many of whom were final year students, who will require their delayed results in order to progress and secure employment.

Both full and part-time students at WIT are still waiting on their exam results from semester one exams, held last December, because of a dispute between WIT lecturing staff and college management.

WIT Students’ Union and USI are urging both parties to find a resolution the senseless standoff immediately.

WIT Students’ Union President, Cathy Pembroke, said:

“The students, who turned up today in mass numbers, demanded that they not be used as pawns in this stalemate situation. The students, who now each pay a 1500 euro registration fee, which includes charges for exams, are incredibly frustrated with the situation.

WIT Students’ Union and the students will continue to apply all necessary pressure to ensure that they get their results.”

USI President, Peter Mannion, said:

“The students are merely asking for the release of their exam results, which they are entitled to, after studying hard and sitting them in December. Some are awaiting their results so that they can for postgraduate studies.

The USI along with WITSU call on the Teacher Union of Ireland (TUI) and WIT authorities to swiftly reach a resolution and deliver the much needed results to students.”
