Waterford Students to Demand Exam Results

3rd February 2010

WIT students are to gather on their college campus at noon today (January 3) to demand their overdue exam results.

Over 10,000 full-time and part-time students at Waterford Institute of Technology are still waiting on their exam results from semester one exams, held last December, because of a dispute between WIT lecturing staff and college management.

Many are final year students who will require these results in order to progress and secure employment. Despite repeated attempts by the Students' Union to encourage both sides to engage and to find a resolution the senseless standoff has continued.

WIT Students' Union President, Cathy Pembroke, said:

"Students have been caught up in a dispute between lecturers and management, with lecturing staff refusing to turn over corrected exam script results carried out in December.

It is completely unacceptable that the only people not involved in this dispute are the people suffering because of it. Many of these students need these results to start apply for jobs and further study.

The students of WIT are calling on both the lecturing staff and the management to display a little maturity and to sit down and agree a resolution to this juvenile dispute, this level of immaturity would not be tolerated of our students. The longer this situation is allowed to continue, the more damage will be done to the image and reputation of both the Institution and lecturing staff."
