Hi all!
I am Peter Mannion and for the coming year I am the president of the Union of Students in Ireland.
USI is the national organisation representing thousands of students across the island and this year is of particular importance for many reasons. It is the organisation’s birthday this year. We will celebrate 50 years of making a difference to members. It is an important event for the student movement and I look forward to celebrating the long and productive past of USI.
USI has the potential to change students’ lives and this is why our organisation is more relevant than ever. USI are waging a war against the re-introduction of third level fees, an issue of critical national importance.
Other issues USI are pressing on is the long promised reform of the grants system. The Student Support Bill, published in 2008, has not been enacted and USI are committed to pushing for this bill to be enacted as fast as possible.
The Civil Marriage Bill is also due to be enacted this year and USI are working with other interest groups to work on this bill. Welfare campaigns continue to be a major focal point for many students on campuses. Training is a major part of USI activities and new events this year include the Activists Academy and Green Training.
As president, I coordinate all the activities within USI and am the lead spokesperson for the organisation. I sit on several committees including being a member of the HEA.
