The Union of Student in Ireland was founded in 1959. Since then, it has grown into the largest sole representative body for a single abstract entity in Ireland. The union currently represents approximately 250,000 third level students nationwide.
Throughout its existence, USI has worked relentlessly to win the right for student representation across the third level educational sector. The organisation now holds a seat on the Higher Education Authority committee. Because of USI, the student community of Ireland now permeates, and is represented on all levels within the education sector through USI.
A major highlight in USI history was the formation of NUS- USI, which is responsible for the joint administration of the the student movement in Northern Ireland. NUS-USI was formed in 1972 by USI and the National Union of Students UK (NUS) by way of a protocol agreement first negotiated to combat the particular problems of sectarianism encountered in the North of Ireland.
Other major events in USI history include successful campaigns to win the right to distribute information on abortion and contraceptive to students, successful campaigns to abolish third level tuition fees, and successful campaigns to cap the college registration fee.
USI will continue to promote its core principles and ensure that our students will always have a singular and powerful voice on a national scale.
