The new officers of the USI started their term this month with high ambitions to continue successfully campaigning for the rights of students in Ireland over the coming year.
Guiding the officers through their year at USI will be the organisation's new president, Gary Redmond, who alongside Officer Board, took up his post on July 1st, 2010.
Mr. Redmond will guide the national union in campaigning for the rights of the 230,000-strong student membership.
As part of his presidency, Mr. Redmond will represent USI and its student membership on the boards of several state agencies. These included the Higher Education Authority
(HEA), the Irish Universities Quality Board (IUQB), the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC), National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI) and the Irish Higher Education Quality Network (IHEQN).
Achievements enjoyed by union over the past year include successful campaigning for the prevention of the reintroduction of third level tuition fees in Ireland and also effective campaigning to cap the student registration fee.
USI also campaigned to secure a newly streamlined maintenance grant system for the students of Ireland. This includes the availability of student grant forms online for downloading.
The new officer board intend to build on these recent successes over the next twelve months.
